Statement
of Clean Air Council Concerning PPL's Pollution Control
Investment
Toni Flora, Harrisburg
Project Manager:
"It's always good to see a power
company doing the right thing. PPL's decision to install
modern pollution controls at two of its power plants will
go a long way towards improving public health in the greater
Harrisburg area. They are installing "scrubbers"
at both their Montour and Brunner Island power plants. The
sulfur dioxide pollution that scrubbers prevent is associated
with all sorts of negative health impacts,
from asthma attacks to heart attacks to premature death.
We can all breathe a little easier once this pollution is
cleaned up.
"It's also worth noting that the
$630 million that PPL is investing in upgrading their facilities
will bring new jobs to the region. People will be employed
installing these technologies. More so, PPL is looking into
using some of the byproducts collected by the scrubbers
as a raw material for other industries. PPL's announcement
is a win-win for Pennsylvania's environment and its economy."
