Clean Air Council Applauds
"Winds of Change" at PECO
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Clean Air Council
announced its support today for PECO Wind, a pollution-free
source of electricity now being offered to PECO customers
throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. All PECO customers
will see the option to purchase wind energy on an enrollment
form included in May's electric bill.
"PECO Wind makes it incredibly easy
for people to make a real difference for the environment,"
said Joseph Otis Minott, Esq., Executive Director of Clean
Air Council. "Wind is the perfect source of clean,
renewable energy-exactly the type of legacy we want to leave
for future generations. If you only do one thing to help
protect the environment, purchasing wind energy should be
it."
The wind energy offered by PECO is generated
at windmills in Pennsylvania, guaranteeing that the environmental
benefits and job creation associated with wind energy will
be felt locally. The wind-generated electricity is made
available to PECO through Community Energy, the nation's
leading wind energy marketer. Charges for people choosing
to purchase PECO Wind will appear on their regular electric
bill.
"PECO Wind costs slightly more than
other sources of electricity - there is a small additional
charge of 17 cents per day - but the huge benefit this energy
source has on local air quality is well worth the price,"
said Minott. "Purchasing just 200 kwh of wind energy
per month would save 2633 pounds of pollution that causes
global warming, 18 pounds of pollution that causes acid
rain and 5 pounds of pollution that causes smog. If more
people in the PECO territory purchased just a little wind
energy, it would make a major difference for air quality
in our region.
"Clean, efficient energy sources
like wind are critical to a sustainable future. Coal and
nuclear energy create environmental problems that jeopardize
public health and that saddle future generations with hazardous
waste. With wind energy powering their homes and businesses,
individuals can make a real difference for the environment
each and every day."
Clean Air Council is a regional environmental
group that advocates for clean energy in addition to its
programs on air pollution, transportation, waste reduction
and recycling, and indoor air quality. The Council's "Pennsylvania
Wind Campaign" has helped make the Commonwealth the
leader wind energy development in the eastern United States.
