Helping improve and preserve the
environment and quality of life in Philadelphia's Manayunk
community.
The Manayunk Travel Awareness Campaign, or MTAC, is a
Philadelphia-first educational initiative by the Clean
Air Council to help improve and preserve the environment
and quality of life in Manayunk by decreasing car use,
even by what at first glance might seem like small amounts.
Reducing traffic congestion can improve air quality, avert
auto crashes and improve the quality of life for Manayunk
residents, businesses, and visitors.

The Need for the Campaign:
Manayunk was settled by immigrants in the early
1800s as an industrial center. The twentieth century brought
a decline in Manayunk's economic infrastructure. Manayunk's
renaissance began in the 1980s. Vacant mills and factories
were converted to apartments, new restaurants, bars, or
entertainment centers, chic boutiques, and galleries.
With the influx of visitors and tourists, Manayunk's parking
problem is now so severe that the Philadelphia City Council
has adopted an ordinance preventing future restaurant
conversions or expansions in the area.
MTAC's Educational Program is designed to:
- Raise Awareness of the seriousness of Manayunk's transportation-related problems.
- Increase Acceptance among persons in Manayunk that action on the part of individuals can contribute to solving these problems.
- Change Attitudes towards automobile use.
- Encourage individuals in Manayunk to take Action to alter their travel behavior.
- Help implement solutions to improve the availability of transportation Alternatives.
Get Involved:
Clean Air Council is in the process of conducting a number of educational workshops in Manayunk to explore the advantages of reducing automobile travel. The Manayunk Travel Awareness Campaign's goal is to reduce the number of automobile trips in Manayunk by at least 5% by the voluntary change of habits people may have about using their cars.
To schedule a workshop or for more information on upcoming workshops, call Dennis Winters at 215 567 4004, ext. 233

regional rail line were thanked for using an alternate
