Pennsylvania School Bus Anti-Idling Campaign

Sample School Bus Operations Manual Section On Anti-Idling - Please feel free to incorporate the following language in your Bus Operations Manual

Lower Merion School District:

Engine Idling

It is the policy of the Transportation Section that engines not be running unless necessary. Unnecessary engine idling not only wastes fuel but it also creates unnecessary pollution. The practice of starting a vehicle and leaving it unattended for 10-15 minutes is unacceptable. Drivers should idle the vehicle only for the time required to defrost the windows. Drivers are prohibited from leaving vehicles unattended while idling. Engines will not be running while awaiting departure at schools except when students are on board and weather conditions require heat, or for other safety purposes.

North Penn School District:

Engine Idling

It is the policy of the Transportation Department that engines not be running unless necessary. Unnecessary engine idling is not only costly but also creates an environment which may be uncomfortable to some people. Engines will not be running while awaiting departure at schools except when students are on board and weather conditions require heat, or for other safety purposes.
