The Pennsylvania Committee of the East Coast Greenway Alliance is comprised of local and state government officials, bicycle and pedestrian advocates, city planners, environmentalists, and concerned citizens.
The committee is working hard to bring the East Coast Greenway through Pennsylvania. When complete, the East Coast Greenway will run mostly off-road on a multiple-use path through Bucks, Philadelphia, and Delaware counties. It will parallel the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers as much as possible, restoring access to area riverfronts that have been hidden by years of industrial and automobile-focused development.
Today, the East Coast Greenway in Pennsylvania consists of mostly on-road routes to bring users through the state. These routes are broken up into 6 SEGMENTS each with its own team, with the aim to take the East Coast Greenway off-road in their area. The East Coast Greenway Alliance aims to complete 80% of the off-road trail by 2010, bringing many BENEFITS to southeastern Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Committee of the East Coast Greenway Alliance needs your support to build the East Coast Greenway step-by-step. To learn more about the Pennsylvania Committee, the trail route, the 6 trail segments, and the Benefits of the East Coast Greenway in Pennsylvania, CLICK HERE.
Since early in 2001, Clean Air Council has been the official Pennsylvania administrative agency of the national East Coast Greenway Alliance. Clean Air Council's transportation program manager, Dennis Winters, along with Pennsylvania Coordinator Ken Edmunds, work with the rest of the Pennsylvania Committee to build local and statewide support for the Greenway.
So far, the Pennsylvania Committee's accomplishments include:
- The securing of $44,000 in funding from The William Penn Foundation in May of 2001
- The awarding of a possible $250,000 in funding from the Delaware Avenue Fund as administered by the Board of Directors of City Trusts
- The unofficial selection of the interim on-road and permanent off-road route
- The completion of a Master Plan and Needs Assessment report funded by the Delaware Avenue Fund grant; 50 copies produced
- The award of a federal Transportation Enhancements (TE) grant for $1.2 million to be used for preliminary engineering on Greenway projects not already underway
- The acquiring of a $250,000 in-kind environmental and design federal grant match from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources
- The presentation to the Fairmount Park Commission of information on the East Coast Greenway in Pennsylvania; and the placement of first informational kiosk in Penn Treaty Park as of November 2002
