Welcome
It’s been a year since Philadelphia City Council’s Hearing on Recycling, held in February 2007, and a lot has happened on the recycling front!  Immediately following the City Council hearing, the RecycleNOW Philadelphia Campaign’s Steering Committee began focusing on the Mayoral primary elections.  In spring 2007, RecycleNOW developed a Five Point Recycling Agenda for the City of Philadelphia, which was delivered to all Mayoral candidates prior to the May primaries.  Shortly after, all five Democrat candidates for Mayor and Republican candidate Al Taubenberger signed on to the Five Point Agenda, including now Mayor Michael Nutter.  The Five Point Agenda calls for, among other things, the development of a comprehensive plan to bring single stream, incentive-based, weekly recycling citywide within the Mayor’s first term in office and the appointment of accomplished individuals to implement this plan via a nationwide search.  The RecycleNOW Steering Committee met last week with Mayor Nutter who re-assured his intention to fulfill the promises he made when he endorsed the Five Point Agenda.  With your support RecycleNOW will hold Mayor Nutter to his promises!  View the Five Point Agenda here: http://www.recyclenowphila.org/5pointagenda.pdf.

In the meantime, proof of RecycleNOW’s success is evident all over the City.  Thanks to the over 12,000 petition signatures and dozens of organizations that have joined RecycleNOW, the Campaign has successfully urged the City to bring single stream recycling (including the collection of cardboard and plastics #1 & #2) to northeast, west, southwest, south, and Center City, Philadelphia.  But more work is needed to bring single stream, incentive-based recycling on a weekly basis citywide.  Thank you for all of your help thus far and we look forward to making this goal a reality!

Recycling FAQ’s
We get many questions about recycling logistics in Philadelphia.  Here a few of the most frequent, taken from the City’s website.  For more information visit RecyclingPays.Phila.gov.

Where do I get a recycling bin?
The City will give you a recycling bin at any of these locations. But you don't have to have one to recycle. You can use any household container (no larger than 20 gallons) for comingled materials, as long as you write "RECYCLING" on it.  Don't put out cardboard boxes, they'll end up wet, split open and make a mess on your sidewalk. For the paper products, put them in a brown paper bag or tie them with twine.

When is my recycling day?
First, check the keymap for your designated neighborhood color,(KEYMAP). Second, check the recycling calendar for your designated week (s), (CALENDAR).

Who should I call if my recycling doesn’t get picked up, or the trash picks up my recyclables?
You should report this problem immediately to the Streets Department of Philadelphia.  You can contact them at 215-685-RECYCLE (7329) or csstreets@phila.gov.
