Environmental Disclosure for Electricity Consumers
In connection with electric industry restructuring, numerous states have established requirements that electricity providers regularly disclose information to consumers about the environmental characteristics of the electricity they sell. These providers must disclose information in the form of a standardized label that indicates the percentage of electricity generated from different sources such as coal, nuclear, and wind, as well as the emissions of pollutants associated with the generation of that electricity. However, Pennsylvania currently does not require electricity providers to actively disseminate environmental information. Clean Air Council believes it is important that consumers receive up-to-date, uniform and easily understandable information about the environmental characteristics of all available electricity products. The Council is currently researching different states' environmental disclosure requirements, and plans to organize an informational meeting with members of the PUC and other bodies to urge that Pennsylvania require providers to make regular environmental disclosure to all electricity consumers.
