Bill in U.S. House of Representatives to establish a comprehensive research program on the impact and occurrence of hormone disrupting chemicals as they affect human, ecological, and wildlife health. Text of HR 852

Status: In Committee

Act Now!

The Environmental Health Research Act of 2003 was introduced on February 13, 2003 by Rep. Louise McIntosh Slaughter [D-NY] and is currently waiting to be evaluated by the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommitte on Health. This Act amends the Public Health Service Act to allow for research on hormone disruption, collecting data on the effects of exposure to low doses of chemicals during the critical stages of prenatal development.

Background Information:

  • According to congressional findings, over the past thirty years there has been an increase in the incidence of childhood cancers, juvenile diabetes, attention deficit-like hyperactivity disorders, autism, thyroid disorders, and auto-immune disorders. More research is needed to understand why this has occurred and to determine if it may be the result of exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals.
  • Very low doses of exposure can cause profound hormone disruption, particularly if it occurs in the womb or right after birth.
  • The health hazards posed by many of the chemicals found in U.S. products are not widely understood, making more research in this area necessary.
